DAVIDSON, N.C. — Just two nights after taking on top-ranked North Carolina, the 'Cats again faced a tough opponent in fifth-ranked Michigan State, who downed Davidson 8-0 at Belk Turf Field on Friday night.
Davidson falls to 6-4 overall with the loss, while Michigan State improves to 10-2.
Leading the nation in almost every offensive category, the Michigan State offense did not disappoint. Jantine Steinmetz, the team and Big Ten's top scorer, added four goals to pace the Spartans, who outshot the 'Cats 29-4 and took a 13-2 edge on corners.
Steinmetz started the Spartan scoring in the fifth minute, putting away a pass from Jeamie Deacon for the eventual game-winner. Becky Manning connected with Floor Rijpma for the team's second goal five minutes later, and Gwen Riley made it 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 18th minute.
Deacon added a goal off a penalty corner, assisted by Amy Schneider and Charlo Van der Laag with five minutes remaining in the first half. Steinmetz scored her second goal just over two minutes later, and Rijpma pushed the Spartans lead to 6-0 on a corner at the end of the first period, again assisted by Schneider and Van der Laag.
After the break, Steinmetz posted her third goal, putting away a pass from Geraldine Raynor in the 36th minute, and Joelle Van Ireland made it 8-0 on a penalty stroke in the 40th minute. Steinmetz scored her fourth and the team's final goal with 32 seconds remaining.
Davidson will return to action on Monday, as they resume a rainout with the Catawba Indians from earlier in the season. The 'Cats hold a 4-1 lead in the game.
