Perkins Named A10 Rookie of the Week

WASHINGTON — Davidson's Ava Perkins has been named Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
It's the first honor for the freshman back from Cary, who scored two goals over the weekend.
"Ava is a competitor," said Davidson coach Zoe Almquist. "She's tough as nails, super-fast and already plays a key role for us in her rookie season. She's inserting on corners and has been great in there, finishing twice this weekend. But where she truly shines is on defense — she makes big plays all the time. I'm so proud of her!"
Perkins scored her first career goal in Friday's 5-2 loss at Richmond. After inserting a penalty corner, she rebounded a saved shot and fired it into the cage. Sunday, her goal with 9:09 remaining helped the Wildcats seal a 2-0 win over Bellarmine.
Through nine games, Perkins ranks third on the team with six points, having added assists against Stonehill and Longwood. And she's helped the Wildcats notch four shutouts, including Sunday's.
Perkins and the Wildcats, now 5-4, will visit Queens on Friday, Sept. 25.
