RALEIGH — Behind 20 points from Issy Morgan, 17 from Charlise Dunn and Millie Prior's emphatic return, Davidson pushed No. 22 N.C. State to the brink Wednesday evening in a 59-57 loss in Reynolds Coliseum.
Though the Wolfpack, a Final Four team last year, took the lead for good with 3:44 to play, a Katie Donovan 3-pointer with 43 seconds left cut it to one and gave the Wildcats a chance. In the final seconds, Dunn's driving layup from the right baseline missed the mark, and after a Wolfpack free throw, her desperation halfcourt heave fell short at the buzzer.
Davidson got off to a hot start in front of a loud crowd, hitting seven of its first 10 shots, and rode that momentum into a four-quarter battle. Morgan scored a team-best 13 points in the first half, including 10 in the opening quarter, and she gave the Wildcats the lead three times on 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes, including 27-25 with 3:41 left in the half.
Prior, meanwhile, had four first-half blocks on her way to a five-block night, while also contributing nine points and nine boards. Dunn and Morgan grabbed eight boards apiece, while Candice Lienafa matched Prior's nine boards as the Wildcats held a 45-44 edge on the glass.
Davidson (3-7) led most of the third quarter after a Dunn trey, part of a 7-0 run, made it 32-30 with 6:53 left in the period. The Wildcats pushed their lead to six points three times in the third and led 50-47 after Tomisin Adenupe's 3-pointer with 5:06 left in the fourth. But N.C. State responded with an 11-2 run before Davidson threatened in the final minute.
Saniya Rivers and Aziaha James led the Wolfpack (7-3) with 25 and 21 points, respectively.
