VCU Edges 'Cats 2-1 in Field Hockey

DAVIDSON — The Davidson field hockey team threatened throughout Friday night's Atlantic 10 contest with VCU, but the visiting Rams ultimately held on for a 2-1 win at Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field.
The Wildcats (4-5 overall, 0-3 A-10) were vying for their first win over VCU since 2015 and outshot the Rams 16-14, including 6-4 in shots-on-goal. Davidson also held an 11-8 edge in penalty corners and had multiple opportunities in the final seconds.
But VCU (6-3, 2-1) only allowed the Wildcats to find the cage once, when Matilda Collins (5 shots) tied it at 1-1 early in the second quarter.
Davidson appeared to tie the game in the final minute on a shot by Ava Mickel, but it was ruled that Mickel struck the ball with her foot, negating the goal.
VCU scored both of its goals off penalty corners, with Luisa Fasold inserting to Ana Afonso Osorio and Ella Fehr finishing the goals.
