DAVIDSON — Sunday's series finale will be about trying to earn a four-game split for the Davidson baseball team, which dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader with Columbia at Wilson Field.
After winning Friday's series opener 5-2, the Wildcats had their eight-game win streak snapped Saturday and fell to 8-3, while Columbia moved to 3-3.
Game 1
Davidson rallied from a five-run deficit to tie it late, but the Wildcats dropped the first game of the day 7-6.
After falling behind 5-0 through two innings, the Wildcats climbed back into it with RBI-singles by Anthony Mase and Parker Nolan in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. Then, trailing 6-2, the Wildcats scored four runs in the sixth to pull even.
In the sixth, Nolan drove in a run with a single, before Michael Carico followed with an RBI-double. Trevor Candelaria then doubled down the left field line to score Nolan and Carico to tie it.
Carico, Candelaria, Nolan, Mase, Ryan Wilson and Jacob Hinderleider each had two hits, with Nolan leading off the fifth with a triple.
Blake Hely threw five innings, allowing five hits and four runs and striking out six. Bennett Flynn took the loss, after Hayden Schott drove in the winning run in the seventh.
Game 2
The nightcap included three home runs — one by Carico and two by Columbia — as the Lions earned a 5-2 win.
Carico's blast to right center, his second homer of the year, came in the fifth inning and cut Columbia's lead to 3-2. But Joshua Solomon's two-run shot in the sixth gave the Lions the separation they needed.
Wilson's RBI-single in the first gave the Wildcats an early lead, but Columbia's Andy Blake homered in the fourth to tie it 1-1 with his second shot of the day. Then Lions Griffin Palfrey and Skye Selinsky drove in runs in the fourth.
Carico was the only Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2-for-4, turning in his eighth multi-hit game in the last nine and extending his hitting streak to 10 games. John Hosmer and Jake Wilhoit each doubled.
Ryan Kutz threw four innings, allowing four hits and three runs in the loss.
