DAVIDSON — The shots didn't fall for Davidson Tuesday night, and the Richmond Spiders took advantage in a 70-64 Wildcats' loss in Belk Arena.
Davidson connected on just 24.2 percent from 3-point range (8-of-33) and on 33.3 percent from the field (19-of-57) in the Atlantic 10 setback.
"It befuddles me," Davidson coach Bob McKillop said of his team's shooting. "I watch them shoot in practice. They're very good shooters. I thought we got very good looks."
Richmond (13-4, 3-1 A-10) led 35-27 at the half and built a 17-point lead in the second 20 minutes. The Spiders were efficient offensively, converting 46 percent from the field and 40.9 from beyond the arc. And they hit 15 of their 16 free throws (93.8 percent).
Davidson (7-9, 1-3) was within three points early in the second half, after Kellan Grady knocked down two free throws and made it 39-36 with 15:54 left. But the Spiders answered with seven straight points to regain control. The lead peaked at 58-41 with 8:02 to play.
"Richmond made us pay for every mistake we made," said McKillop.
Jon Axel Gudmundsson led Davidson with 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Grady scored a game-high 19 points, and Carter Collins scored nine of his 14 points in the first half.
Richmond's Nick Sherod and Jacob Gilyard scored 18 and 16, respectively, and Nathan Cayo added 10 points.
