CHARLESTON, S.C. — Wrapping up a busy stretch of three matches in five days, Davidson battled for nearly four hours before falling to College of Charleston 5-2 Wednesday afternoon at Patriots Point.
The Wildcats finished their busy stretch 2-1 and fell to 7-5 overall on the year, while CofC improved to 4-5.
"As an entire team, we continued to work on areas of our game that we are not as confident with and improved tremendously against a tough and talented team," said head coach Susanne Depka. "If we were able to do this against a quality opponent, we will be confident in the matches we have ahead! I'm again very proud of these young women and the culture we have created!
Davidson and College of Charleston played a three hour and 45 minute match Wednesday. The Wildcats fell behind early 1-0 after the Cougars took all three doubles slots and then fell in four of the six singles matches giving CofC the win. Three of the matches went to three sets, but the 'Cats pulled out just one of them.
The two team points came from Megan Scholvinck and Samantha Armas at No. 1 and 4 positions. The senior Scholvinck won her second in a row with a 6-4, 6-3 victory to give her four wins on the season.
Armas won again, a team-best 10th time in 12 matches, by pulling out the lone three-setter for the 'Cats. The junior fell in the first set, 6-2, but stormed back to capture 7-5 and 6-2 wins in the next two sets. Armas is 7-2 on the year at No. 4.
Alexandra Abele and Elizabeth Truluck dropped the other two three set matches at No. 3 and 5 singles. Abele, who had her five-match win streak halted in doubles with Armas, fell 6-2, 6-7, 7-5. The freshman Truluck also won the middle set, but still dropped a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 decision, just the third defeat on the year in 12 matches for her.
Davidson takes some time off before hitting the courts again, facing cross-county rival Charlotte, March 16 at 10 a.m.
