DAVIDSON, N.C.  — The start of three matches in five days, Davidson got things going with a strong 5-2 victory at home vs. Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 women's tennis Saturday afternoon inside Knobloch Tennis Center.

The Wildcats improved to 6-4 and won their first league win in three matches. The Rams fell to 3-5 overall (0-1 A-10).
"It was a good win today as the team definitely worked through some difficult physical and mental challenges today," said head coach Susanne Depka. "But with all struggles we grow and improve, which will help in the upcoming matches. We look forward to enjoying our spring break trip with two tough matches on the road!"

Behind a sweep of the doubles' positions, Davidson went up 1-0. Megan Scholvinck and Elizabeth Truluck took a 6-3 win at No. 1, while Samantha Armas and Alexandra Abele rolled to a 6-1 victory at No. 2 to win their seventh on the year.

Singles play saw Davidson take wins at No. 3-6 positions to secure the team win. Abele, who pulled out an 11-9 tiebreaker to win 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 at No. 3 for her seventh win of the season.

Armas continued her strong season, moving to a team-best 9-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 4. Truluck also netted a straight-set win behind a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 5, giving the freshman eight wins.

Clinching the match win was fellow freshman Mira Gladstone at No. 6. She scored a 6-1, 6-3 victory to improve to 4-3 on the year.

Davidson next travels to UNC Wilmington for a match, March 4, at 2 p.m.
