PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Despite putting at least three players in double figures for the 19th time this year, Davidson was unable to overcome an offensive drought in the fourth quarter, falling to Saint Joseph's on the road Wednesday evening in Atlantic 10 women's basketball in Hagan Arena, 66-54.
The defeat ended a few winning streaks for the Wildcats as they fall to 13-9 overall and 7-2 in league play. They had their three-game overall win streak halted, while seeing their A-10 program-best five-game road win streak dating back to the end of last season snapped as well as a four-game overall road win streak.
Davidson held a 48-39 lead entering the fourth quarter, but was outscored 27-6 in the final frame. The Hawks went to a zone defense and the 'Cats were never able to find their shot, going just 2-of-19 from the floor, including 1-of-12 from behind the arc.
Saint Joseph's (7-15, 3-6 A-10) shot 9-of-12 in the fourth quarter and nailed all four three-pointers, while using a 16-3 run early to erase the Wildcats lead.
Kristalyn Baisden led the Hawks with 23 points, while Alyssa Monaghan scored 18 and Katie Jekot had 11 apiece. The trio combined to hit eight of the Hawks' nine threes, shooting 9-of-24 from behind the arc for the game.
For the 'Cats, Sarah Donovan again just missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds to go with four dimes. Katie Turner had 11 points and Justine Lyon scored 10 off the bench.
Turner had banked in a three-ball before the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter and give the Wildcats the nine-point lead heading into the final quarter.
A 7-2 run to close out the first quarter got the Wildcats out of a four-point deficit to go up 14-13.
SJU tied things up early in the second quarter at 18-all at the 8:01 mark, but Davidson stepped up its defense, holding the Hawks to just three more points while cranking up the offense on the other end. The 'Cats went on a 14-3 run to end the quarter, nailing 8-of-14 shots with a couple three-balls, and grabbed a 32-21 lead at halftime.
Davidson returns home for its annual Play for Kay game, hosting St. Bonaventure this Saturday, Feb. 9, at 12 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was the sixth meeting all-time between both team's women's basketball programs dating back to 2008 … the Wildcats are still searching for their first win in the series, falling to 0-6 … the five-game league road win streak was the longest since a program-best nine set at the end of the 2011-12 season into the 2012-13 season … Lyon's double-digit scoring game was the 65th of her career … Donovan has a team-best 18 double-figure scoring games this year … Turner dished out six assists, her eighth game this year with six or more.
