BLACKSBURG, Va.  —
For the second straight match, Davidson had a down-to-the-wire finish only to come out on the wrong end again in a 4-3 setback to Duquesne in Atlantic 10 women's tennis Saturday evening in Blacksburg, Va, on the campus of Virginia Tech.

The Wildcats (5-4, 0-2 A-10) played five three-set singles matches on the day, but were only about to pull out one despite each of the matches going back and forth.

"It was another tough one today," said head coach Susanne Depka. "We had a chance with match point, but just were unable to pull through. We are doing the right things on the court and just have to continue to stay focused."

Thanks to the doubles play of Samantha Armas and Alexandra Abele at No. 2 (6-4) along with Gabrielle Centenari and Nicole Krykanov at No. 3 (6-2), Davidson gained the early 1-0 lead.

Duquesne (6-4, 1-0 A-10) though came through in singles by pulling out four of the tightly played three-setters for the match win.

Scoring the other two team points for the 'Cats were Armas, who nailed down a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 for her team-leading eighth win, and freshman Elizabeth Truluck at No. 5. Truluck came back from a set down (1-6) to win the next two sets at 6-3 and 7-5, helping her improve to 7-2 on the season.

Abele's three-set match at No. 2 needed a tie-breaker to finish it, with the junior falling 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(4). Centenari also played a tie-breaker in her first set, pulling it out 7-4, but then lost 6-2 and 6-0 in the next two sets.

At No. 1, Megan Scholvinck won the second set, 6-4 after falling 6-2 in set one, but then was unable to pull out the third set in a 6-4 defeat.

Davidson hosts Rhode Island next in another A-10 match, March 2, at 12 p.m.
