PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Junior Katie Turner scored a career-high 25 points and Davidson shot 47.7 percent from the field, but it was unable to overcome a big run by Drexel in falling 74-63 in the first round of the Preseason Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament Saturday afternoon inside John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Drexel (2-0) used a 21-7 run that spanned the final few minutes of the first quarter and went halfway through the second quarter to turn a 13-12 deficit into a double-digit lead at 33-20. The Wildcats had to play catchup the rest of the way, getting to within five point once in the third quarter and then three times cutting its deficit to eight in the final quarter, but it was as close as they would get.
Turner paced the 'Cats (1-1) with her 25 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 5-for-7 from behind the arc and a perfect 8-of-8 at the charity stripe.
Sarah Donovan reached double figures with 14 points and added six rebounds, while Chloe Welch dropped in a personal-best 11 points. Cassidy Gould dished out a career-high 10 assists.
For the Dragons, Bailey Greenberg filled the box score with 31 points on 12-of-24 shooting and 5-for-9 from three-land. Keishana Washington had 18 points, 13 of which came in the first half, and Niki Metzel scored 10 to go with six rebounds.
Both teams shot well for the game, with Davidson finishing at 21-of-44 overall and 7-of-15 from three-point range, while going 14-for-16 at the free-throw line. Drexel was 28-of-58 from the floor with an 8-for-16 mark from behind the arc.
Down 10 (39-29) at the break, Davidson used a mini 7-0 run sparked by a Turner three-pointer to get within five at 41-36 to open the third quarter. Drexel's Greenberg answered with five quick points and the lead later would reach 13 at 53-40 before the quarter ended at 54-44.
Davidson tried to turn the pressure up with a full-court press, getting within eight points on three different occasions in the final quarter, but again the Dragons would answer each time on their way to the win.
It was a back-and-forth first quarter, with six lead changes. Turner gave the Wildcats a 13-12 lead on her second triple of the quarter, but Drexel closed on a 7-2 run to go up 19-15 after 10 minutes of play.
The Dragons pushed their lead to double-digits at 33-20 on a Greenberg three-pointer with 4:36 on the clock in the second quarter. Turner did her best to keep the Wildcats close, drilling two more three-balls in the quarter for 12 first-half points before Drexel headed to the break up 39-29.
Davidson awaits its next two opponents for the Preseason WNIT consolation games, which will take place, Nov. 15-16.
GAME NOTES: This was the second meeting all-time between both team's women's basketball programs … Drexel has won both meetings … Davidson is making its fourth appearance in the Preseason WNIT … Gould's 10 dimes were the most since Chloe Johnson had the same amount vs. Rhode Island, Feb. 11, 2017 … Turner's 20-point outing was the sixth of her career … Davidson had 11 fast-break points, its seconds straight game with double-digit points on fastbreaks.
