ST. LOUIS — Davidson battled third-place Saint Louis to a five-set match Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale — and the Wildcats will get another shot at the Billikens in next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Sunday's 3-2 loss is not the end of the line for Davidson, which fell to 10-17 overall and 5-9 in league play. The Wildcats are headed to the conference tournament for the second time since joining the league in 2014.
"I was proud of team's performance today," said Davidson coach Chris Willis. "Our offense showed great improvement, and our serving was effective. We needed a match like this to mentally prepare ourselves for the tournament. Earning a berth is a good step for the program, and we're going in to win."
Davidson and Fordham tied for the sixth and final postseason spot, and the teams split the season series. The Wildcats gained the edge by way of the league's second tiebreaker: head-to-head set records between the tied teams. In two matches with Fordham, Davidson won five sets to Fordham's four.
The Wildcats opened Sunday with a 25-23 victory in the first set, then won the third set 25-22. The Billikens (16-11, 10-4) took the second 25-18 and the fourth 25-20 before securing the win with a 15-11 edge in the fifth.
Hattie Rodriguez led the Wildcats with 19 kills, while Madeline Wynn added 13 and Annalyse Kitzberger had 11. Sydney Champaigne totaled 49 assists, and Josie Treadwell had a team-high 21 digs.
