CHARLOTTE — The rally came too late for the Davidson Wildcats Tuesday night at cross-county rival Charlotte in a 71-58 loss at Halton Arena.
The 49ers' win snaps Davidson's six-game win streak in the series and drops the Wildcats to 0-2 on the season.
"Right from the opening tap, their aggressive defense put us on our heels," said Davidson coach Bob McKillop. "And when we got put on our heels offensively, it made us tentative and hesitant defensively."
Davidson's best offense came once it was down by double digits, as the Wildcats crafted a 14-3 run, including eight straight points, midway through the second half. The spurt pulled Davidson within 62-53 on a Mike Jones 3-pointer from the top before Charlotte answered.
"I thought our guys fought back in the second half," said McKillop. "We just did not have enough gas in the tank to weather coming back from a 24-point deficit."
The Wildcats also got within nine with 1:29 left, following a driving layup by Jon Axel Gudmundsson. But Davidson could get no closer.
The 49ers shot 50 percent in the first 20 minutes, opened an 8-2 lead early and led 39-22 at the half. Charlotte led by as many as 19 in the first half and the lead grew to 46-22 early in the second 20 minutes.
Kellan Grady led Davidson with 20 points, while Gudmundsson had 11 and Luke Frampton scored 10. Gudmundsson led the Wildcats with eight rebounds and four assists.
Up Next
Davidson will play its next two at home. The Wildcats will host UNCW in the home opener on Saturday, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. in Belk Arena.
