KINGSTON, R.I. — Davidson used a pair of runs in the final two quarters to erase a 10-point deficit and remain perfect in Atlantic 10 play by pulling out a 77-67 road win at Rhode Island Saturday afternoon inside the Ryan Center.
The Wildcats (9-7, 3-0 A-10) are off to their best A-10 start all-time and have won five straight league games dating back to last season. The victory was also their third consecutive league road win and fourth in the all-time series against Rhode Island.
Down 48-38 halfway through the third quarter, Davidson used an 18-7 run that spanned all the way to the 6:58 mark in the fourth quarter to grab a 56-55 advantage. Justine Lyon scored eight of her 18 total points during the run.
Then trailing 60-56 in the fourth quarter with 5:42 remaining after the Rams hit back-to-back buckets, the 'Cats closed the game on a 21-7 spurt to seal up the 10-point victory. Katie Turner and Lyon combined for 12 of the final 21 points.
Lyon came off the bench for her eighth straight double-digit scoring game, while Turner led all scorers with a season-high tying 21 points. The sophomore swished home a career-best 11-of-12 free throws and Davidson as a team went a season-best 24-for-32 overall.
Sarah Donovan had her second straight 20-point outing, getting an even 20 on 8-of-13 shooting to go with six rebounds.
Rhode Island (6-9, 1-2 A-10) put three in double figures, paced by Elemy Colome's 16 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Nicole Jorgensen netted 14 points to go with eight rebounds and three blocks, and Jalissa Ross had 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.
The Rams finished the game shooting 50 percent, while Davidson came in at 40 percent after shooting just 24 percent in the first two quarters. They hit 17-of-31 field goals in the last two quarters. The 'Cats scored 29 points off of 30 Ram turnovers and added 16 fast-break points.
Davidson opened with a cold shooting touch from the floor, hitting just 3-of-16 shots in the first quarter to fall behind 16-11. It would miss its next six shots to start the second quarter and fall behind by 10 (21-11).
Donovan helped the Wildcats get back in it with seven straight points to make it 27-21 at 4:03. The Rams though would score eight of the final 12 points of the quarter, including the last final five, to push their lead back to 10 at the break, 35-25.
Next Up, Davidson returns home for a pair of games starting Wednesday, Jan. 16, against Richmond at 7 p.m.
