CHAPEL HILL – Davidson led No. 14 North Carolina after 14 minutes of play in the Dean E. Smith Center Saturday, but the Tar Heels took over from there in an 82-60 win to close non-conference play and the 2018 calendar year for the Wildcats.
"I thought the big key to the game was them speeding us up," said coach Bob McKillop. "They have that capacity to do that. They've always had that capacity to do that, and it invited us into sometimes making the wrong decisions."
Jon Axel Gudmundsson led Davidson (9-4) with his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds after having 24 points and 10 boards against Charlotte Nov. 27 and 20 points and 10 rebounds against Winthrop Dec. 4.
Luke Frampton added 15 points for the Wildcats, who shot 30 percent (20-of-67) from the floor.
A 9-0 Davidson run, including six straight points from Frampton, gave the Wildcats a 24-19 lead with 9:03 left in the first half. Davidson remained ahead for nearly the next four minutes, without scoring, and at that juncture, 13 of its 24 points had come from seven Tar Heel turnovers.
"We were 7-of-8 from the foul line (at that point)," said McKillop. "That's an indication that we were making them defend us."
But Carolina (9-3) scored the game's next eight points and closed the half on a 20-4 run to lead it 39-28 at the break.
Carrying over into the second 20 minutes, the Tar Heels' run was 34-8, which made it 53-32 with 14:50 to play. Carolina's lead peaked at 26 with 11:15 left. Five Tar Heels scored in double figures, led by Cam Johnson's 17.
"We can get better," said McKillop. "You're exposed by one of the best programs in the country. A lot of guys played today. A lot of guys fought today. No one gave up."
Guard Carter Collins, a Chapel Hill native, started his fourth straight game in place of Kellan Grady, who remained sidelined with an injury.
