DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson Wildcats are off to a good start.
That's how coach Bob McKillop, now in his 30th season, saw Tuesday night's 83-63 season-opening win over Cleveland State in Belk Arena.
"There were moments tonight when we were brilliant, where we did some things offensively and defensively that we're absolutely thrilled about," said McKillop. "First game of the year, there's going to be some rough edges."
Four Wildcats scored in double figures, led by sophomore Kellan Grady, who had 24 points and shot 5-of-11 from 3-point range. And Davidson out-rebounded the Vikings 47-25, with 21 of those boards coming on the offensive end. Guards Grady, Jon Axel Gudmundsson, KiShawn Pritchett and Carter Collins had seven boards apiece.
To go with his rebounds, Gudmundsson, a junior from Iceland, contributed 16 points and a team-high seven assists. Redshirt freshman guard Luke Frampton and Austrian freshman forward Luka Brajkovic scored 10 points each.
The game marked the return of Frampton, redshirt senior Nathan Ekwu and redshirt junior Dusan Kovacevic, all of whom missed most of last season with injuries. They combined to play 44 minutes, with Frampton joining Grady, Gudmundsson, Pritchett and Brajkovic in a four-guard starting lineup.
"It just gives us tremendous depth," McKillop said of the returning trio. "What they have to understand, is they're playing a role for us this year."
Cleveland State was led by Rashad Williams, who came off the bench to hit five 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 15 points. Seth Millner scored 10 points for the Vikings.
But the Wildcats were in control most of the way and led by as many as 26 in the second 20 minutes. As his team moves on, McKillop wants to see more consistency. Grady wants to see better shot selection.
"We feel we can make guys defend us and get the best shot, not just the first shot we can get," said Grady. "That will be very tough to beat. But for the first game, I think it was definitely a good start."
