DAVIDSON, N.C. – Freshman Lucas Hauth scored twice and set up another as Davidson erupted for four goals in the first 23 minutes en route to a 6-2 victory over Saint Joseph's in Atlantic 10 men's soccer Wednesday at Alumni Stadium.
Off to a 3-0-0 start in league play for the first time since joining the A-10 in 2014, the Wildcats improve to 7-4-0, while the Hawks fall to 7-4-2 and 1-1-2.
Davidson could not have scripted a better start as the Wildcats struck three times over a 2-minute and 28-second span, starting with Hauth's first collegiate goal at the 12:19 mark.
Shortly after Hauth connected with Ned Morrissett on a through ball to make it 2-0, the Wildcat frosh got his foot on a loose ball in the box to all but put the game out of reach in the 15th minute.
Henry Howell, the reigning A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week, set up a Jordan Hill header with a corner kick almost eight minutes later to make it 4-0 midway through the first period.
Howell, who scored the game-winner off a left-footed blast in the Wildcats' overtime win at Dayton, found the back of the net in the 59th minute for his team-leading fourth of the season.
In addition to scoring their most goals in a game since defeating Marist, 6-1, in 2010, it was the Wildcats' best offensive performance against a league opponent in 16 years (W, 8-3 at UNCG).
Fellow freshman Jackson Bracy put the final tally on the board for Davidson with a header off an assist from Quinn Dudek.
Four of the 'Cats' six goals were scored by freshmen.
In all, 22 different Wildcats played in a game where they held a commanding 20-10 advantage in shots.
Kyle Lochbihler (45') and Leon Maric (59') scored the lone goals for Saint Joseph's, which upset then-No. 21 Fordham over the weekend.
Up Next
Davidson will play its next two on the road beginning with a 7 p.m. contest at La Salle Saturday.
Postgame Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
We challenged the guys to elevate their level and they stepped up.
With so many super tight games the past 2-3 weeks, it was nice to break away early.
We rotated a couple new starters in from last game including Lucas, and he turned the game for us.
Saint Joseph's got a goal back late in first half then another early in the second half, so Henry's goal was really important to cement the victory.
Coach Kelly Findley pushed the guys in yesterday's practice to be sharper in a finishing exercise and that extra bit panned out in the match.
Thankful for Emily Hintz in promotions as the Thundersticks in the crowd added energy. The players certainly fed off the added spark.
