KINGSTON, R.I. – In addition to Hassan Martin (21 pts, 17 rebs) and Kuran Iverson (17 pts, 11 rebs) each recording double-doubles, Rhode Island closed regulation on a 16-7 run as the Rams got past Davidson in overtime, 73-70, Saturday at the Ryan Center.
Jack Gibbs paced the Wildcats with a game-high 29 points on 10-of-21 shooting, including five treys, while Peyton Aldridge charted 19 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season.
After Davidson (15-14, 8-10 A-10) pushed its lead to as many as nine, 55-46 on an Aldridge layup with 6:05 to play, the Rams responded with their game-changing spurt.
In the extra session, E.C. Matthews scored eight of his 18 points, including a layup with 2:31 remaining to give Rhode Island (21-9, 13-5 A-10) the lead for good. The Wildcats had a chance to tie the score in the closing seconds, but Aldridge's 3-pointer came up short.
The Rams finished with a 43-34 advantage on the glass, including 14 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points.
Tonight's contest featured nine ties and 18 lead changes.
Davidson got back-to-back 3-pointers from Will Magarity and Gibbs to go up, 33-27, before the Rams closed the first half with five straight to cut the deficit to 33-32 at the break.
Up Next
Davidson will be the ninth seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament and will play Thursday at noon against La Salle in Pittsburgh, Pa.
