Davidson Drops First Match of Season at Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — In a first-time matchup against SEC-foe Tennessee, the Davidson women's tennis team suffered their first setback of the year with a 7-0 defeat on the road Friday evening at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.

The Wildcats fell to 3-1 on the young season, suffering just their sixth defeat in the past 27 matches dating back to the start of last season. The Volunteers remained perfect on the season at 6-0.

The match started out with a strong battle in doubles. The pair of Alexandra Abele and Ava Todd kept their win streak alive to start the season at 4-0 after taking a 6-4 decision at No. 3. Megan Scholvinck and Samantha Armas fell 6-4 though at the top spot to halt their two-match win streak.

The middle team of Anna Catharine Feaster and Ally Sexton went one extra game before falling 7-5 to seeing their win streak stopped at two as well and give the Volunteers the doubles point.

In singles, the trio of Abele (6-1, 6-0), Scholvinck and Todd all saw their three-match win streaks to start the year come to an end with defeats at No. 4, 2 and 5 positions, respectively. Scholvnick faced the No. 64 player in the country and lost 6-2, 7-5.

Todd pushed her Volunteer opponent to a super tie-breaker after splitting the first two sets 7-5 and 6-4. She then fell in the tie-breaker 10-6.

Freshman Samantha Armas dropped her first collegiate match with a 6-2, 7-5 defeat at No. 6.

Davidson will next play at UNC Asheville Sunday at 2 p.m. It owns an 8-1 all-time record vs. the Bulldogs since 1983.
