DAVIDSON, N.C. — Looking to continue their winning ways, the Davidson women's tennis team will play host to Campbell this Friday at 3 p.m. and then Elon Saturday at 1 p.m., as the Wildcats' home schedule is close to finishing out.
In addition to playing two of their last three remaing home matches Friday and Saturday, fans are encouraged to come out as Davidson will honor some of its former greats who helped get women's tennis program started. Attending the weekend matches will be Carol Goldsborough Jarrett '75, Sue McAvoy '77, Mary Miller Hollins '74, Ruth Murphy Parker '77, Becca Stimson '77 and Dea Booth Verlin '76.
The Wildcats, who will play one more home match, March 25 vs. Dayton, are riding a five-match win streak and are 8-2 overall. The winning streak matches last year's longest streak. They have been off since winning their third straight Atlantic 10 match, March, 1, at Richmond. Freshman Megan Scholvinck clinched the winning team point and Davidson pulled out a close 4-3 decision on the road. Prior to that win, the 'Cats netted a pair of 5-2 decisions at George Mason and George Washington.
Ava Todd has picked up where she left off last year when she won a team-best 19 singles matches, pacing the team with eight wins this year. The sophomore is riding a five-match win streak. Todd earned her fifth career weekly award, March 1, when she was tabbed the A-10 Player of the Week.
Fellow classmate Anna Catharine Feaster has a total of 13 wins overall between singles (6) and doubles (7), while senior Elaina Cummer is right behind her with 11 combined wins, getting seven of them in singles action with a 7-3 record.
The freshmen tandem of Scholvinck and Gabrielle Centenari have stepped right in as first year starters and been very impressive. They each have won A-10 Rookie of the Week once and have a combined 11 singles wins between them. Scholvinck is 5-3, playing at No. 3 and 5 position, while
picking up another two wins with Todd in doubles action.
Centenari has a 6-3 singles record, playing mainly No. 4. She currently is riding a season-best four-match win streak. The freshman has also teamed with Jenna Brunner at No. 3 doubles to go 3-2.
Davidson as a team is a combined 36-21 in singles play, while going 16-13 in doubles matches.
After this weekend's matches, the 'Cats hit the road for a pair of A-10 matches vs. Duquesne and Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia, Pa., March 19-20.
