WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team made it a perfect Atlantic 10 weekend by closing it out with another 5-2 league win, this time over George Washington, Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Wildcats won their season-best fourth straight to move to 7-2, while improving to 2-0 in A-10 play. It is the first time they have started league play 2-0 since the 2008 season as a member of the Southern Conference.
"I'm really proud of the team effort this weekend," said coach Sara Anundsen. "George Mason and GW have both improved since last year, and compete hard. I'm proud of the way our team fought and believed in themselves. They stayed composed and focused in tight situations, which made the difference."
Â
For the fourth match in a row, Davidson opened up a 1-0 lead by taking wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles over GW (3-3, 0-1 A-10). Anna Catharine Feaster and Ally Sexton won their fourth consecutive match to move to 5-1 on the season at No. 2 with a 6-3 decision.
Â
The pair of Elaina Cummer and Sara Stein sealed up the team point by picking up their third straight win with a 6-1 victory. The duo are 4-5 on the season, and tied with Feaster and Sexton at 2-0 in A-10 matches.
Â
Though Cummer and Feaster saw their own personal win streaks come to an end at No. 1 and 3, the rest of their Wildcat teammates picked them up. Ava Todd won her season-best fourth straight with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 2 to seal up the match win.
Â
The freshmen tandem of Gabrielle Centenari and Megan Scholvinck continued their strong debuts with wins at No. 4 and 5 positions, respectively. Centenari cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory for her third straight win, and fifth overall, while Scholvinck gave up just one game in rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Â
Wrapping up the singles wins was junior Jenna Brunner, who earned her first victory of the season. She came back from falling in the first set, 6-4, to pick up a 7-4 tie-breaker second-set win. With the team match decided, Brunner played a super tie-breaker and prevailed 10-4 for her 21st career singles win.
Â
With its strong weekend, Davidson as a team improved to 32-19 in singles matches and 15-11 in doubles play.
Â
Davidson concludes a three-match road trip with an A-10 match at Richmond, March 1.
