DAVIDSON, N.C. – Peyton Aldridge scored 24 points and Jack Gibbs added 17, as Davidson used a fast start and strong finish to defeat Rhode Island, 65-54, in Atlantic 10 men's basketball action Tuesday evening in John M. Belk Arena.
Aldridge, a sophomore from Leavittsburg, Ohio, finished 6-of-12 from the floor, made four treys and went 8-of-10 at the charity stripe.
Davidson (17-9, 9-6 A-10), which has won five of six and 34 of its last 36 at home, shot 42.3 percent, while holding the Rams to just 34 percent.
Nathan Ekwu led the Wildcats defensively with 4 blocks to go along with a career-high 11 rebounds. Rusty Reigel also turned in a solid effort for Davidson with a personal-best 8 boards and 6 assists.
Rhode Island (15-13, 7-8 A-10) was led in scoring by Jared Terrell who totaled 13 points, while Kuran Iverson pulled in 10 rebounds.
Gibbs and Aldridge helped the Wildcats build a 22-8 lead over the first 10 minutes of the contest, combining to score Davidson's first 20 points.
A Brian Sullivan 3-pointer with 5:18 remaining in the opening half gave the 'Cats their largest lead of the period at 28-12, but Rhode Island closed out the frame with a 12-4 run to go to the break down, 32-24.
After the Rams cut the deficit to five early in the second half, the Wildcats responded and stretched the margin back to as many as 16.
Davidson finished with a 39-34 edge on the glass.

Davidson will travel to Fordham for a 2 p.m. tip Saturday afternoon.
