DAVIDSON, N.C. – A powerful second half wasn't enough to overcome three first period goals, and Davidson field hockey (2-9) dropped a close 4-3 contest with Pacific (9-3) Sunday at Belk Turf Field. The win for the Tigers is their narrowest margin of victory this season, having taken every other W by four goals or more and winning their ninth in a row.
Â
The senior trio of Becca Jones and captains Katherine English and Anne Federico led the offense for the Wildcats, each scoring, while English added an assist. Jones topped the team with three shots, all on-target. Sophomore goalkeeper Bean Rodriguez picked up six saves.
Â
The Tigers took the lead right away, netting a goal on a shot from the top of the arc to the far post. The scorer, Savannah Burns, went on to add insurance with a second goal just eight minutes later, this time finding the back of the cage from a penalty corner.
Â
Davidson got on the board midway through the half, as English received the ball off the stick of Byler from a Fisher corner and fired it to the back of the cage from the top of the penalty mark.
Â
Pacific put their lead back at two after a straight center shot from the penalty spot.
Â
The Wildcats played an aggressive second half, spending the majority of the first part on the offensive end of the field. Jones found the net about twenty minutes in, picking up the rebound off a blocked shot and firing the ball to the high left corner.
Â
Clinging to a narrow lead, the Tigers' leading scorer, Marguerite van Wyk, put control back in Pacific hands after her chip shot to the left side off a corner went in.
Â
Federico added a late goal in the 65th minute, taking a dish from English and redirecting the ball to the high left corner, but the 'Cats were unable to score the equalizer and took the hard-fought defeat.
Â
Davidson remains at home this week, welcoming No. 3 North Carolina to Belk Turf Field for a Tuesday tilt.Â
