SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Freshman Jenna Brunner won her fifth match in a row and Davidson started its final go-around in Southern Conference play with a 5-2 road win at Wofford Sunday afternoon in women's tennis.
Â
The Wildcats, playing their final season in the SoCon before moving to the Atlantic 10 next year, improved to 6-9 overall (1-0 SoCon). The SoCon-opening win snapped a three-match skid in league openers for the 'Cats.
Â
The Terriers fell to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in SoCon action.
Â
For the fifth time this year Davidson picked up the first team point by taking two of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Elania Cummer and Brites Moniz-Soares registered their team-leading seventh win with an 8-4 victory, and then the team of Sarah Stein and Tamara Hill at No. 3 won their first together by also picking up an 8-4 decision.
Â
The winning continued on into singles action, with the 'Cats netting victories at No. 1, 4, 5 and 6. Brunner led the way with a three-set win at No. 5, the first of her young career. The freshman won a 6-0 first-set decision, but fell 6-4 in the next one, before sealing up the match win with a 6-3 score.
Â
Brunner is 9-4 on the season, with an 8-3 mark at No. 5.
Â
Moniz-Soares won her eighth match and 38th of her career with a solid 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1. The freshman Stein won a thriller, going the distance in a three-setter. She won her first set, 7-5, but came up short in a 6-4 second-set decision to force a third set. Stein prevailed, taking a 6-3 decision to move her singles record to 5-9.
Â
Hill made it a perfect day for herself with a well-played two-set win at No. 6, earning wins of 6-4 and 7-5 to net her second victory of the season.
Â
The Wildcats return home for the first time since Feb. 21 when they play host to Chattanooga in another SoCon matchup, March 12, at 3 p.m.
