BOONE, N.C. — Senior Brites Moniz-Soares went 2-0 on the day, but Davidson fell short in its bid for its second Southern Conference victory of the year as the Wildcats fell 5-2 on the road to Appalachian State Saturday afternoon at the Yonahlossee Racquet Club in women's tennis.
Davidson fell to 5-14 and 1-5 in league play, while ASU ran its record to 5-14 and 1-4 in SoCon action.
Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer teamed together at No. 1 doubles and won their second straight match in dramatic fashion. They pulled out a tie-breaker with an 8-6 decision to win the match 8-7 for the lone doubles win for the 'Cats.
The senior continued her winning day into singles and tallied her team-best 10th victory of the year with a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 1. The win was also Moniz-Soares' 40th for her career.
Fellow classmate Nisha Crouser scored the Wildcats' other team point with a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3.
Cummer and Jenna Brunner tried to help Davidson capture two more team points at No. 2 and 4 singles, respectively, forcing third sets, but both fell in the final set. Cummer regrouped after a 6-1 first set defeat to earn a 7-5 win in the next set, but was held to one game in the third set and lost 6-1.
Brunner won her first set at No. 4 by the count of 6-3, but lost a tie-breaker in the second set and eventually lost the third set 6-0.
The 'Cats close out a three-match road swing with a visit to cross-county rival Charlotte, April 4, for a 3 p.m. match.
