DAVIDSON, N.C. – Georgia Southern's Anna Claire Knight and Angel McGowan each reached career highs with 31 and 26 points, respectively, and Davidson was outscored 13-5 in the final three minutes of the game in dropping a 90-82 decision Saturday afternoon at John M. Belk Arena as part of the Wildcats' Play 4 Kay game.
Davidson (12-13, 9-5 SoCon) saw its six-game win streak in the all-time series vs. the Eagles snapped. GSU ran its record to 8-17 overall and 6-8 in league play, halting its own four-game skid.
Knight finished 9-for-17 from the floor and went 11-for-16 at the charity stripe, getting 20 of her 31 points in the second half. McGowan drained 10 of her 18 attempts and added five free throws to surpass her previous career-high by eight points.
Briana Jones and Lacie Dowling each chipped in 10 points for the Eagles.
The Wildcats were paced by Laura Murray's 25 points, her 13th game of 20 or more points this year. She was followed by Dakota Dukes (career-best 11-13 at free-throw line) and Hannah Early with 19 points apiece.
Rachel Piles had a nice game off the bench with 10 rebounds (season-best seven on offense) and a season-high seven points.
Playing from behind most of the day, the Wildcats came back to tie the game up at 77-all on a pair of Murray free throws with 3:23 remaining. It was short-lived though, as Dowling gave the lead back to Georgia Southern for good with a three-ball in the corner on the its next possession and then added two free throws a few minutes later for an 82-77 lead with 1:17 on the clock.
Prior to her three-pointer, Dowling had missed her last four tries from behind the arc, drawing no iron on three of the attempts.
The Wildcats tried to keep it close in the end, but missed four straight three-point attempts after Dowling's three and on single one possession gave the Eagles' three offensive rebounds as the deficit grew to 87-77 with 35 seconds remaining.
GSU finished the game shooting 49.2 percent, including 53.3 percent in the second half when it hit 16-of-30 shots. The Eagles also held a 47-40 edge on the boards and outscored Davidson 46-34 in the paint.
Davidson was held to 37.1 percent shooting on 26-of-70 from the floor and was just 6-for-20 from behind the arc. The Wildcats did shoot 77.4 percent at the line, swishing home 24-of-31 free throw attempts.
Down 30-19 in the first half, Murray sparked a 17-6 run with nine points and the Wildcats tied things up at 36-all with 1:17 on the clock. The Eagles regained the lead on their next possession and Knight capped off the half with a triple to make it 41-36.
Davidson takes a week off before hosting Western Carolina, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m. in an ESPN3 game. It will also be Senior Day as the Wildcats will honor Murray and Shneeka Center prior to the start of the contest.
