CHARLESTON, S.C. – Peyton Aldridge scored 22 points, Jack Gibbs recorded his first career double-double and Davidson earned its seventh-straight win with an 80-68 victory at College of Charleston Saturday afternoon in TD Arena.
The Wildcats are off to their best start under 26-year head coach Bob McKillop improving to 9-1 overall.
Aldridge, who led three Davidson players in double figures, drilled five 3-pointers, grabbed nine boards and had four blocks in 39 minutes of action. Gibbs poured in 19 points to go along with a personal-best 11 rebounds from his point guard position, while Jordan Barham scored 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting off the bench.
In addition to holding the Cougars without a field goal for more than six minutes in the opening half, Davidson used a 19-6 run capped off by a Brian Sullivan trey to go up 36-19.
Consecutive buckets from Nathan Ekwu stretched the margin to 18 before Charleston (5-6) took advantage of Wildcat foul trouble closing with 10 unanswered to cut the deficit to 41-33 at the break.
After Canyon Barry's 3-pointer made it a 45-41 game, with 15:14 to play, Davidson responded with a 12-4 spurt to push the margin back to double digits, where it would stay the rest of the way.
The Wildcats, who torched the nets for 56.3 percent in the first 20 minutes, finished the contest shooting 44.9 percent.
Barry led the Cougars with 20 points, while Joe Chealey and Adjehi Baru added 19 and 12, respectively.
For the ninth time in 10 contests, the Wildcats outrebounded their opponent finishing with a 45-34 advantage, including 14 at the offensive end.
Davidson will enjoy a 10-day break before traveling to No. 5/6 Virginia for a 6 p.m. ESPNU contest on Dec. 30.
