MISSOULA, Mont. – In addition to the backcourt trio of Jack Gibbs (28), Brian Sullivan (22) and Tyler Kalinoski (21) combining for 71 points, Davidson shot 58.9 percent and drilled 34-of-36 free throws as the Wildcats won their fifth straight with a 110-99 victory over Montana Wednesday evening at Dahlberg Arena.
Davidson (7-1), which just missed tying the school record (111, at William & Mary, Feb. 4, 1964) for most points in a road contest, also got double figures from Jordan Barham and Peyton Aldridge, who scored 16 and 14, respectively.
The last time three Wildcats scored at least 20 points in a contest was on Feb. 27, 2010 when Brendan McKillop, JP Kuhlman and Jake Cohen each recorded 24 in a double-overtime win at Elon.
Gibbs and Kalinoski, the last two A-10 Players of the Week, both went 7-of-13 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers, while Sullivan had his best contest of the season drilling four treys and 8-of-9 free throws. Gibbs, who scored 23 points after intermission, also finished a perfect 12-for-12 at the charity stripe and handed out a game-high eight assists.
The Wildcats, who entered the night tied for second nationally in 3-pointers per contest making 12.4 per game, connected on 10-of-23 for a 43.5 percent clip.
After Montana (3-5) cut the deficit to 58-56 early in the second half, Davidson responded with an 11-3 run and stretched its advantage to 12, 80-68, following a Sullivan 4-point play and Gibbs' triple in consecutive trips. The Grizzlies got to within 96-93 with 2:49 remaining, but were unable to inch closer as Sullivan drilled back-to-back long range jumpers to put the game out of reach.
Montana was just as impressive at the offensive end shooting 55.9 percent, including 11-of-22 from behind the 3-point line.
Martin Breunig led four Grizzlies in double digits with a game-high 30 points, going 10-for-13 from the field and 10-of-11 at the line. Jordan Gregory added 29 points in 35 minutes, Jermaine Edmonds finished with 11 points and Mario Dunn contributed 10.
The Wildcats closed the opening period on a small spurt to take a 45-42 lead into the half.
For the seventh time in eight contests this season, Davidson controlled the glass outrebounding the Grizzlies, 31-23.
Davidson will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest against Niagara at Belk Arena.
