DAVIDSON, N.C. – A strong defensive effort and double-figure scoring from Peyton Aldridge and Jack Gibbs led Davidson to a 72-49 victory over UNCW in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena.
In addition to forcing 20 turnovers, Davidson (4-1) held the Seahawks to just 30.4 percent from the floor, including a 3-for-15 effort from behind the 3-point line.
Aldridge, who was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week on Monday, led the Wildcats with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Gibbs finished with 13 points and a game-high four assists.
Playing its fourth straight road contest to begin the season, UNCW (2-2) was led by a pair of double-doubles, as Addison Spruill scored 17 points and had 10 boards, while Cedrick Williams added 15 and 12.
After Spruill cut the Seahawk deficit to 14-11, midway through the opening period, Davidson responded with a 16-3 run capped off by a Tyler Kalinoski trey to push the margin to double digits, where it would stay the rest of the way. The Wildcats led by as many as 19 in the half before going to the break up, 41-24.
Despite struggling from the floor at just 34.3 percent overall, Davidson held a 50-45 advantage on the glass, including 19 offensive rebounds.
The Seahawks closed to within 13 early in the second half, but was unable to inch closer as the Wildcats stretched their lead to 24 on separate occasions, both after Jordan Barham layups with over five minutes remaining.
Davidson will host cross-county rival Charlotte in the annual Battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
