DAVIDSON, N.C. – Jake Belford scored a career-high 20 points and Davidson torched the nets for 56.3 percent, including 10 3-pointers, as the Wildcats defeated Campbell, 86-51, in non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday evening at Belk Arena.
Belford led a balanced Davidson (2-0) attack that featured 12 different scorers and 40 points from the bench. Jordan Barham joined his classmate in double figures, totaling 14 points on a 7-for-7 night, with 12 coming in the second half. Oskar Michelsen was the sharpest from long-range, hitting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc to improve to 9-for-11 on the season.
Michelsen capped off an 18-2 Davidson run with a 3-pointer and extended the Wildcats' lead to as many as 23, 39-16, in the opening period with another long-range jumper. Belford, who led all players at the break with 12 points, scored on a left-handed layup just before the buzzer to give Davidson a 43-23 advantage at the half.
Kyre' Hammer scored 16 points to lead three Camels in double figures, while D.J. Mason and Curtis Phillips added 15 and 10, respectively.
In addition to a 38-27 margin on the glass, Davidson finished with 52 points in the paint and 25 points off 17 Campbell (1-1) turnovers.
The Camels finished at 46.9 percent, but were limited to just one 3-pointer and went 4-of-16 at the charity stripe.
The 'Cats' largest lead of the night was 37 following a Barham layup with 4:21 to go.
For the third straight season (Duke, 2012-13; Virginia 2013-14) Davidson will host a nationally-ranked/ACC opponent at Time Warner Cable Arena when No. 6/6 North Carolina visits the Queen City for a 2 p.m. tip Saturday.
