DAVIDSON, N.C. – In a battle of two nationally-ranked and conference foes, No. 19 Davidson and No 8 Saint Louis played to a scoreless draw in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Friday evening at Alumni Stadium.
"It was a game that clearly could have been won by either team," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "But as the game progressed, I believe we created the better and more clear-cut chances."
Saint Louis (8-2-1, 1-0-1 A-10) finished with a 14-11 edge in shots, while the Wildcats' Matt Pacifici recorded a game-high five saves.
"Matt was sharp in goal, our center backs were strong in marking, and the work rate and commitment from the full team on the defensive side of the ball was superb."
"Certainly a shutout is always valuable, especially against such an athletic, talented team like Saint Louis."
After the Billikens had the better chances in the opening period, Davidson (5-1-3, 0-1-1 A-10) started fast in the second and had three quality looks early, including shots from in front by Valeriy Sviderskiy and Maxi Pragnell that were saved by defenders.
"That second-half surge demonstrated this team's belief, fitness and depth," commented Spear.
With less than a minute remaining in the first extra session, Alan Reiter had an opportunity to put the game away, but his one-on-one attempt with Saint Louis' keeper missed just outside the far post.
"Robert Cristo is one of the top-performing strikers in the nation, and we controlled him well. Saint Louis must be one of the most athletic and tallest teams we have ever played, so not allowing a goal on a corner kick or cross was huge," said Spear.
Up next, Davidson will travel to in-state foe Duke Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
GAME NOTES: Rankings above are based on Soccer America's Top-25… In conference play a team is awarded 3 points for a win, while both teams receive 1 point for a tie… Tonight's contest marked the first-ever Atlantic 10 match at Alumni Stadium.
