Davidson Tallies Third Straight Shutout, Plays to Draw vs. Florida Atlantic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In another great all-around effort and battle by the Wildcats, the women's soccer team earned their third straight shutout in playing to another scoreless draw vs. Florida Atlantic during the final day of the Embassy Suite Classic held by Florida Gulf Coast at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
Davidson (0-1-3) has shutout Coastal Carolina, FGCU and FAU in the last three games. It's the first time they have blanked three straight opponents since the mid-part of October in 2009.
Rachel Locke and Becca Fisher were part of the all-tournament team. Locke had an outstanding weekend, picking up a pair of shutouts and stopping 13 shots on goal, including a great penalty kick save and a rebound shot in the same play in the second half vs. FGCU that helped the Wildcats force overtime.
After a quite first 45 minutes of play, Davidson had some great looks in the late parts of the second half. The 'Cats fired off 13 of their 14 total shots and picked up nine corner kicks in the half. They had three straight corner kicks in one stretch in the half.
Natalie Spach missed a shot that went high in the 75th minute. Senior Lindsay Blum had a header that went wide left later off a corner kick. Then with just over a minute left, freshman Kate Joss had a shot that was saved by FAU's (0-3-1) Courtney Zwetsch on a diving stop.
As regulation ran down, Stephanie Piperno, who hit one off the crossbar in the 80th minute, had an open look on the far side of the box, ripping a shot that went high.
Davidson dodged an Owl attack 2:45 into the second overtime, with Kayla Faulkner just missing a header to the right post after a header pass from Alexandra Cardenas in the six-yard box. It was all set up after a corner kick that the Wildcats cleared up, before FAU pushed the ball back into the 18-yard box.
Ashley Finke tried to end it with a low-liner shot for Davidson with four minutes left in the game, but Zwetsch stopped it on another diving save.
The Wildcats had a 10-7 advantage on corners, while FAU won the shot battle with 17 total, but only four of those went on frame compared to the 'Cats' five.
Davidson returns home to continue its non-conference slate of games, hosting Southern Methodist Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.
