CHARLESTON, S.C. – Davidson earned a crucial Southern Conference baseball series victory over The Citadel, 12-8, in the second game to complete a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Riley Park.

After suffering their worst loss of the season in the series opener Friday, the Wildcats responded by claiming the first game of the twin bill Saturday, 6-4. In the second game shortly after, nine different batters pounded out 14 hits, while LHP Rob Bain (2-4) pitched a career-high seven innings, en route to the series-clinching victory. The win keeps the Wildcats in the hunt for a berth in the SoCon tournament.

Davidson (15-30, 10-17 SoCon) saw the most production out of the ninth slot in the batting order. Starting left fielder Ty Middlebrooks enjoyed a career game by going 3-for-4 with an RBI, and late-inning defensive replacement Andrew Pope prevented The Citadel (28-21, 15-9 SoCon) from getting back in the game in the eighth inning with a home run robbing catch in centerfield. He also added a two-run home run in the ninth, which was the first of his career. Additionally, designated hitter Ryan Lowe went 2-for-5 with three RBI, and outfielder Forrest Brandt went 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI.

The Citadel was paced by catcher Joe Jackson, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a home run, giving him three total for the day. Leftfielder Drew DeKerlegand went 2-for-5 with five RBI, including a grand slam.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead early before Jackson's homer for The Citadel in the fourth inning. Lowe drove in the first run with a single up the middle in the first, Middlebrooks singled through the right side to drive in an unearned run with two outs in the second inning, and then a pair of errors and an RBI-single by third baseman David Daniels (1-for-6) gave the 'Cats two more runs in the top of the fourth.

With two outs in the fifth inning, first baseman Andrew Barna (2-for-5) tripled, and then was singled home by second baseman Sam Foy (1-for-4) for a 5-1 advantage. The Citadel pulled within three again though on a wind-aided home run to right field by shortstop Jonathan Stokes (2-for-4). Both teams had to deal with winds in excess of 20 miles per hour for the duration of the series.

Davidson took a 9-2 lead in the sixth, as Brandt doubled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs, and Lowe (groundout) and Barna (single) each drove in a run each. Jackson doubled in the bottom half to drive in a run for the Bulldogs.

Davidson restored its seven-run advantage in the top of the eighth, but DeKerlegand hit a grand slam to bring the Bulldogs within three. The Citadel was then able to bring the tying run to the plate with runners on the corners, and pinch-hitter Connor Walsh nearly delivered. However, Pope, who had entered the game in the seventh inning, leapt at the wall to rob what may have been a home run  and end the inning.

Pope's ninth-inning home run gave the 'Cats a five-run cushion heading into the final frame, and The Citadel was only able to get one more run as RHP Matt Saeta finished his second game of the day.

Bain was charged with four runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts for the win. RHP Austin Mason (3-3) was tagged with four runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts, as the Bulldog defense made four errors in the first four innings.

Davidson will next host Duke in its home finale at Wilson Field Tuesday at 6 p.m.
