CULLOWHEE, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team put a positive note on their fifth and final match in a nine-day span, blanking Southern Conference-foe Western Carolina 7-0 on the road Saturday afternoon.
Davidson evened its record to 9-9 and picked up its second league win, moving to 2-7 in SoCon play. Western fell to 1-11, 0-6 in the league.
For the second match in a row, and 10th time this year, the 'Cats opened up with the match with a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. After the Catamounts had to forfeit the No. 3 spot, the No. 2 team of Nisha Crouser and Stephani Synn sealed up the team point with an 8-3 triumph. The duo ran their record to 8-7 overall and pushed their win streak to three straight.
Crouser and Synn then helped lead Davidson to a sweep of the singles matches, taking all six in straight sets. Crouser won her personal-best 11th match with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4.
Synn won her third straight, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 to run her record to 5-7.
Freshman Laina Cummer matched Synn with her own 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles, while top player Brites Moniz-Soares won her second match in the past three with a nice 6-2, 6-3 win.
Tamara Hill stopped a five-match skid by blanking Erin Maguire of Western, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles for the 'Cats' fifth point. Blake Nickles was credited with the final point as the Catamounts had to forfeit the No. 6 singles slot.
