DURHAM, N.C. – Matt Berezo reached base four times and drove in three runs to lead Duke past Davidson, 9-3, Tuesday night in non-conference baseball action in Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Designated hitter Ryan Lowe and shortstop Michael Zeblo each went 3-for-4 to lead Davidson (8-19), with Lowe driving in two runs and Zeblo driving in the other.
Berezo went 3-for-4 with one double and a walk to lead Duke (17-13). Centerfielder Grant McCabe and shortstop Kenny Koplove (1 RBI) were each 3-for-5 at the plate as the Blue Devils totaled 13 hits.
Lowe drove in second baseman Sam Foy from third base in the first inning on an infield single for an early 1-0 Davidson lead, but an RBI-double by third baseman Jordan Betts and a fielding error gave Duke a 2-1 advantage in the bottom half. The Blue Devils added another run in the second inning during a bases-loaded double play. Zeblo hit an RBI-triple in the third inning to bring Davidson back within one, but Berezo hit an RBI-double in the bottom half of the frame to restore the two-run cushion for Duke.
The Blue Devils took a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI-single by Marconcini. Davidson answered in the top of the sixth inning when centerfielder Forrest Brandt walked to lead off the frame, stole second, and then scored on a single through the right side by Lowe. However, Duke added three runs in the seventh on a pair of bases loaded walks and an RBI-single and one more run in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
RHP James Marvel (4-2) held Davidson to two runs on six hits and no walks in five innings of work, also striking out seven. Three Duke pitchers held the 'Cats to one run over the final four innings. LHP Rob Bain (0-3) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Davidson will next play a three-game non-conference series with UNCW. The first game will be Friday at Wilson Field at 6 p.m., and the next two will be at UNCW Saturday (4 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.) The Saturday game was recently added to the schedule. The Wildcats have also changed the game time for their Friday, April 19 contest hosting UNCG, moving it back one hour to 7 p.m.
