BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Hunting for its first Southern Conference win of the season, the Davidson women's tennis team came up short on its trip to Samford, falling 5-2 to the Bulldogs Friday afternoon.
Davidson slipped to 7-7 on the campaign and 0-5 in league play, while Samford moved to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in SoCon play.
The doubles team of Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer gave the Wildcats an 8-5 triumph at No. 1, but the Bulldogs won the next two slots by the scores of 8-6 and 8-4 to earn the first team point of the match.
Moniz-Soares and Cummer won their first league doubles match and improved to 6-5 on the season.
Samford went on to take four of the six singles matches to seal up the team win. Senior Stephani Synn snapped a personal four-match losing skid, with a solid 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles. She won her 21st career singles match.
Nisha Crouser continued her strong junior season with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 4 singles to improve to 9-4. The junior is 9-2 in her last 11 matches, which includes a personal-best seven-match winning streak.
Moniz-Soares nearly gave Davidson its third point, taking Kristin Lewis at No. 1 to a third set by winning the middle set 6-1. The junior fell in the final set 6-3 after dropping her first set 6-0.
Davidson wraps up its three-match road trip at No. 67 Chattanooga on Saturday at 10 a.m.
