DAVIDSON, N.C. — Seeking its fourth straight win, the Davidson women's tennis team fell just short as the match came down to the No. 2 doubles position with USC Upstate taking the final team point for a 4-3 victory Friday afternoon at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Davidson fell to 3-2 on the young season, while the Spartans improved to 3-2.
The match started with singles play and both teams split the six matches. Brites Moniz-Soares and first-year player Elaina Cummer scored identical three-set wins (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) with victories at No. 1 and 2 to give Davidson two points.
Nisha Crouser made it three in a row for herself with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 4 to push her season record to 3-2.
Tied at 3-all, the teams moved indoors to play doubles and it was a battle to the end. After falling 8-1 at the No. 3 spot, Cummer and Moniz-Soares tied things up in doubles for Davidson with an 8-3 victory. It was the duos fourth straight win as they improved to 4-1 on the year.
The Spartans and the Wildcats went down to the wire at No. 2. Stephani Synn and Crouser took six games from Constanze Kuerten and Allison Beeler, but it was not enough as USCU sealed up the doubles point and match-winning point with an 8-6 triumph.
Davidson takes the rest of the weekend off and will next be in action Feb. 23 with a doubleheader at home against Belmont Abbey (10 a.m.) and Wingate (2 p.m.) as the Wildcats continues on with their nine-match homestand.
