DAVIDSON, N.C. – Anna Davis's fifth goal of the season wasn't enough to get the Davidson field hockey team past Longwood as the Wildcats dropped a 2-1 contest to the Lancers at Belk Turf Field Sunday afternoon to conclude the regular season.
Prior to the game, the Wildcats (6-12, 2-6 NorPac) celebrated the careers of seniors Carolyn Macek, Tyler McFayden, Brooke Osborne and Sydney Schreiner as part of the team's annual Senior Day celebration.
The Wildcats clinched a spot in the 2013 NorPac Tournament with Longwood's win over Appalachian State Friday evening. Their loss to the Lancers put them as the East Division's fourth seed in the tournament.
Davis led the team's offense, putting up four shots – a pair of which came on goal. Katherine English, Anne Federico and Lucy Pidcock each added a pair of attempts as well as the Wildcats outshot the Lancers 12-8, including a 9-0 advantage in the second half.
Carolyn Macek came up with a trio of saves on the Lancers in keeping it a close game. Madeline Herder also came up with a big defensive save after Longwood drew Macek out of position to try and put the shot past her. The Lancers held a slim advantage on penalty corners at 6-5.
Nicole Deckard and Jennifer Burris each tallied a goal for Longwood (8-11, 6-2 NorPac), with Burris leading the Lancers in shots with four. Kim Ruiter and Meghan O'Connor were each credited with an assist. Longwood keeper Lauren Bernard made three saves in the win.
With all of the action coming in the first half, it was the Wildcats who struck first. After a shot by Pidcock bounced off Bernard, Davis sent the rebound into the net to put Davidson in front less than ten minutes into the contest.
Four minutes later, Deckard tied the game with Longwood's first goal of the contest. Inside the circle, Ruiter sent a pass to Deckard, who crossed it into the opposite end of the net to knot the score at 1-1.
The Lancers netted another five minutes later to take a 2-1. Burris inserted a penalty corner to O'Connor, who sent it right back to Burris in front of the net. Burris struck with a shot across to front of the cage to tally the go-ahead goal.
Despite putting up nine shots and holding a 3-0 advantage on penalty corners in the final 35 minutes, the Wildcats couldn't put the ball in the back of the cage again and took the 2-1 loss. They will head to the 2013 NorPac Tournament Wednesday, Oct. 6. Official seedings and match ups will be announced at a later time.
