Box Score

BOONE, N.C. – Sophomore left fielder Forrest Brandt reached base for Davidson five times, but Appalachian State won 10-4 in the Southern Conference baseball opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Beaver Stadium.

Brandt went 3-for-3 with two walks and two RBI to lead Davidson (4-7, 0-1 SoCon). Senior right fielder Jake Berman went 2-for-5 and senior first baseman Calvin Siegelbaum extended his hitting streak to six games going, 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The Mountaineers' (11-2, 0-1 SoCon) first four hitters in their lineup all had multi-hit games, led by centerfielder Tyler Zupcic who went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Shortstop Will Callaway went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Appalachian State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with four consecutive hits to score the first three batters. Starting senior RHP Ryan Overcash (1-3) was able to induce a fielder's choice and an inning-ending double play though to end the inning. The Mountaineers extended the lead to 5-0 in the third inning after designated hitter Daniel Kassouf drove in Zupcic with a double and right fielder Tyler Tewell drove in Kassouf with a triple.

The Wildcats got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on an RBI-single to right center by Sigelbaum that scored junior shortstop Michael Zeblo, but Appalachian State answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

Davidson battled back in the top of the fifth and sixth innings to reduce the deficit to four runs. Junior third baseman Andrew Barna singled to right field to drive in Brandt from second with one out in the fifth. Then the 'Cats added two runs in the sixth inning on a single to right center by Brandt. Freshman designated hitter Ryan Lowe led the sixth off with a walk, and with one out, Sigelbaum and Berman hit back-to-back singles to load the bases for Brandt.

RHP Ryan Arrowood (3-0) left the game following Brandt's two-RBI single and was replaced by RHP Tyler Moore, who retired the next two Davidson batters to get out of the inning and then retired the next six batters he faced for a perfect 2.2 innings of work.

Appalachian added a run each in the seventh and eighth innings for the final margin.

Arrowood allowed four runs on nine hits and four walks in 5.1 innings of work and struck out seven to earn the win. Davidson came out strong in the first inning, as Berman sent the first pitch into left field, Brandt reached on an infield single, and Gadaire was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Arrowood settled in to retire the next three batters, striking out two.

Overcash allowed eight runs on 12 hits and a walk in 3.1 innings to work, striking out two in taking the loss.

Davidson will look to even the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
