BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State scored nine runs in the fifth inning en route to a 16-3 win over Davidson in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Beaver Field.
Sophomore Forrest Brandt had another strong day at the plate for Davidson (4-8, 0-2 SoCon), hitting his first home run of the season and going 2-for-4 with two runs.
Appalachian State (12-2, 2-0 SoCon) designated hitter Daniel Kassouf (2-for-5) drove in the first run of the fifth inning with a base hit and then hit the grand slam to cap the scoring in the frame as the Mountaineers batted around, taking advantage of five walks and a hit batsmen in the inning while getting three hits. For the game, second baseman Hector Crespo went 2-for-5 with three runs and three RBI and shortstop Will Callaway went 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs and an RBI.
RHP Seth Grant (2-1) pitched eighth innings for the Mountaineers and did not allow any runs after the fourth inning, finishing the day with three earned runs allowed on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Brandt homered to right field in the first inning to give Davidson an early 1-0 lead, but Appalachian State answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and added an unearned run in the second inning. Davidson trimmed the three-run deficit to one in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI-double by senior centerfielder Drew Gadaire (1-for-3) and a sacrifice fly by senior second baseman James Cerbie (0-for-2).
Senior RHP Brian Russell (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season, working four innings and facing three batters in the fifth inning. He was charged with allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks.
The Mountaineers added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the final margin.
Davidson and Appalachian State will conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
