Box Score
BOONE, N.C. – Davidson scored three in the top of the ninth inning to force extra innings, but Michael Pierson drove in the game-winning run for Appalachian State in the bottom of the 10th to give the Mountaineers a 5-4 victory in Southern Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore catcher Daniel Gerow led Davidson (4-9, 0-3 SoCon) at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a run scored. Junior third baseman Andrew Barna went 2-for-4 with a walk and RBI. Sophomore left fielder Forrest Brandt and senior second baseman James Cerbie were both hitless, but Brandt drove in two runs and Cerbie drove in one.
Pierson entered the game in the eighth inning for Appalachian State (13-2, 3-0 SoCon) as a pinch runner and went 2-for-2 with base hits in the ninth and 10th innings. He was the lone Mountaineer to enjoy a multi-hit game, as Davidson finished with 10 hits to Appalachian State's nine.
The bases were loaded with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning when Pierson came to the plate and hit a perfectly placed infield single. The ball had enough momentum to slip past RHP Michael Zeblo, but it died on the infield turf and a charging Barna (who moved to shortstop with one out in the 10th) was unable to reach it in time.
The Wildcats were trailing 4-1 entering the top of the ninth inning facing Appalachian State closer RHP Nathan Hyatt, who was seeking a two-inning save after pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Sophomore Kelly Myers pinch-hit and drew a walk and Gerow and senior right fielder Jake Berman (1-for-2) both singled to load the bases. Brandt then drew a walk to score Myers, and the Mountaineers replaced Hyatt on the mound with RHP Tyler Moore (2-0).
Moore retired the first batter he faced, but Barna scored Gerow with an infield single and Cerbie scored Berman with a sacrifice fly. Zeblo then singled to left and Brandt attempted to score the go-ahead run from second base, but he was thrown out at home to end the inning.
Trailing 2-0, Davidson pulled within one in the top of the seventh inning when Brandt scored senior first baseman Calvin Sigelbaum (1-for-3) on a sacrifice fly. Sigelbaum had singled with one out and moved to third base on a double by Gerow. Berman walked to load the bases before Brandt sent a fly ball out to centerfield to score Sigelbaum.
Appalachian State extended its lead to three though in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI-groundout by pinch hitter Alex Leach and a bases-loaded walk by second baseman Caesar Crespo (1-for-3).
The Mountaineers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Crespo led the inning off with a base hit and advanced to second on the play on a throwing error. Centerfielder Tyler Zupcic followed with a double down the left field line to score Crespo, and Zupcic eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Tyler Tewell after moving to third on a passed ball.
Sophomore RHP Jip Richards (0-1) was charged with the loss as he surrendered a leadoff single to Trey Holmes, who eventually scored the winning run. RHP Danny Mooney started for the Wildcats working 5.1 innings and surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts. LHP Rob Marcello started for ASU and allowed one run on four hits and five walks with one strikeout in 6.2 innings.
Davidson will return home to Wilson Field and host NC Central in a non-conference game Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Wildcats will then host league foe Elon in a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
