ORLANDO, Fla. – Chris Czerapowicz scored a game-high 15 points and Davidson used a 25-7 run midway through the contest to defeat West Virginia, 63-60, in the semifinals of the 2012 Old Spice Classic, Friday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
The Wildcats will face the winner of Oklahoma / Gonzaga in Sunday's championship at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
Czerapowicz, who played a major role in Davidson's game-changing spurt, also grabbed nine rebounds in 33 minutes of action. Junior De'Mon Brooks added 12 points and five steals for the Wildcats, while fellow frontcourt players Jake Cohen and Clint Mann each scored 11.
Davidson (3-2), which trailed by as many as seven in the first 20 minutes of action, scored the first nine points of the second half to grab the lead for good. The Wildcats stretched the advantage to as many as 11 on separate occasions, with under nine minutes to play.
The Mountaineers slowly chipped away at the double-digit deficit to make it a one-point game, 58-57, on a Juwan Staten steal and layup, but Czerapowicz responded with his third 3-pointer of the contest to push Davidson's lead back to four, 61-57, with 45 seconds to go.
For the second straight day, the Wildcats torched the nets in the second half shooting 58.8 percent to finish at 48.8 percent overall. In addition to holding the Mountaineers to just 40 percent from the field, Davidson went 17-of-22 (.773) at the charity stripe.
Through their first two games of the tournament, Davidson is 25-of-41 (.609) from the floor in the final stanza.
Staten paced three Mountaineers in double figures with 15 points. Gary Browne contributed 11 off the bench while Deniz Kilicli recorded his third career double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
After West Virginia (1-2) pushed its lead to 30-22 with 3:11 left in the first half, the Wildcats responded with eight unanswered capped off by a Czerapowicz layup and triple to tie the score. A Staten layup on the next trip down the floor gave his club a 32-30 advantage at the break.
The Mountaineers grabbed 18 offensive rebounds to hold a 35-26 edge on the glass.
