WASHINGTON – Isaiah Kempf rushed for 73 yards and threw for 172 and a score to lead Georgetown to a 40-16 football win over Davidson in the season opener for both teams Saturday night at Multi-Sport Field.

Jonathan Carkhuff passed for a career-high 364 yards and two TDs for Davidson (0-1), and Lanny Funsten caught eight passes for 102 yards. Jonathan Adams had three receptions for 66 yards, and Reese Williams caught eight passes for 46 markers.

Nick Campanella rushed for 82 yards and three scores for the Hoyas (1-0), and the Georgetown defense recorded six sacks.

The Hoyas won the field position battle all night long with an average starting drive at their own 47 in the game, scored on all five trips to the Red Zone and won the turnover battle 4-1.

The Wildcats unveiled their new Air Raid offense and moved the ball fairly well all night, but could not capitalize on their chances in the Red Zone and committed the four turnovers.

“It's all things that can be cleaned up,” said Davidson coach Tripp Merritt, “and give credit to Georgetown. They pushed us around up front at times. But this is the first game we've played in this offense, and we're only going to get better.”

After trailing 21-7 at the half, Davidson trimmed the margin to 21-10 on a 24-yard field goal by Chazzo Habliston midway through the third. Two pass interference calls on the Hoyas and a 24-yard Carkhuff pass to Funsten on 3rd-and-17 keyed the drive.

The Hoyas came right back as Campanella rushed for 30 yards on the next series and scored on a 2-yard run. The Hoyas missed the point after, leaving the margin at 27-10.

Davidson got down to the Georgetown 18-yard line on its next series but turned the ball over on downs. The defense got a 3-and-out, but Carkhuff was picked off by David Quintero, who returned the interception to the Davidson 37.

“There were those two key points in the game,” said Merritt, “when we hit on some long balls and got inside their 20. If we're able to get in the end zone on either or both of those possessions, I think it would have been a different game.”

Campanella rushed for 36 yards on the next series, and Georgetown got a little luck. Kempf fumbled the ball at the 1-yard line while trying to score, but Kevin Sullivan recovered in the end zone for the touchdown. That made the margin 33-10 with 14:10 left in the game.

With the game tied 7-7 in the second quarter, Kempf keyed two Hoya scoring drives with long scrambles after being flushed out of the pocket. The junior rushed for 20 yards on 3rd-and-18 to set up a Campanella 1-yard run on the first drive.

Then during Georgetown's next possession, on 1st-and-10 from the Davidson 35-yard line, Kempf rushed for 29 yards to set up a 4-yard run by Campanella.

Down 14-7, Davidson had a chance to cut into the lead when Carkhuff hit Adams with a 50-yard pass to set up 1st-and-goal from the 9. But a sack forced the 'Cats to try a 34-yard field goal, and a low snap allowed the Hoyas to block the kick.

After three straight 3-and-outs to start the contest, the 'Cats put together an 11-play, 72-yard scoring drive that tied the game in the first quarter. A 13-yard strike from Carkhuff to Adams and a 14-yarder to Funsten drove the 'Cats deep into Georgetown territory. On 3rd-and-goal from the 8-yard line, Carkhuff fired a bullet to Williams for the touchdown with 29 seconds left in the frame.

Davidson opens its home slate against Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. in Richardson Stadium.

Game Notes: Funsten has had 100-plus receiving yards in four of his last six games… Carkhuff passed for 300-plus yards for the second time in his career… Davidson used nine wide receivers in the contest… Davidson, which averaged just 31.9 penalty yards last season, had 54 in the first half… The 'Cats lost their ninth straight season opener on the road and nine of their last 10 season openers overall.
