DAVIDSON, N. C. – The Davidson men's soccer defense earned its third shutout in four games, while three different goal scorers provided the offense, as the Wildcats took a 3-0 victory over Gardner-Webb in the final game of the Davidson adidas Classic Sunday night at Alumni Stadium.
Appalachian State (2-2-1) won the tournament title with a 1-0-1 record after defeating Detroit, 2-0, in the match prior to Davidson's Sunday. The Mountaineers played Gardner-Webb to a 0-0 draw Friday and were playing their first games without head coach Shaun Pendleton, who died Tuesday. The Wildcats and Detroit went 1-1, while Gardner-Webb rounded out the field.
All three Davidson goals came off crosses into the six-yard box. Junior Brian McGue scored his second goal of the season in the 21st minute off a cross from senior Hunter Hayes to give Davidson a 1-0 lead in the first half. In the 59th minute, senior Allen Page blasted a one-touch pass from junior Peter Paras into the back of the net from close range. McGue also received an assist on the play.
Freshman Max Riehemann capped the scoring the 78th minute with his first-career goal after senior Dennis Shannon found him in front.
Both goalkeepers made three saves, as Davidson's Chip Sanders earned his third shutout of the season. Davidson had a 12-11 advantage in shots.
The Wildcats return to action Wednesday in Alumni Stadium against Winthrop.
