BOONE, N.C. – Donald Sims scored 25 points, including 19 in the second half, to lead Appalachian State to a 66-56 SoCon win over Davidson Thursday night in Southern Conference action at the Holmes Center.

Sims was 9-for-14 shooting for the night to pace the Mountaineers (15-10, 9-4 SoCon), while Kellen Brand and Marcus Wright each finished with 10 points, and Josh Hunter pulled down 10 boards for the Mountaineers.

Davidson (12-12, 7-5 SoCon) led 30-28 at halftime on the strength of 12 first-half points, all 3-pointers, from Bryant Barr. Appalachian though, took control with a 47-40 lead midway through the second period, after four ties and two lead changes, and led the rest of the way. Barr's fifth trey came with just under two minutes to play, pulling Davidson within six, but Sims knocked down a pair of free throws and recorded the final basket to secure the win.

Barr finished with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 5-for-7 from downtown. Jake Cohen and Will Archambault, who recorded his 1,000th point of his Davidson career on a free throw four minutes and 47 seconds into the game, also scored in double figures for Davidson, finishing with 10 points each.

Davidson finished the contest shooting 32.8 percent (20-for-61) from the field and 28.1 percent (9-for-32) from deep. Appalachian, who held a 41-28 advantage in rebounds, finished with a 47.9 percent (23-for-48) shooting clip, and converted six of nine three-point attempts (66.7 percent).

The teams traded baskets to open the second period before Josh Hunter converted on an inbounds play to lift Appalachian to a 36-34 lead with 16:41 to play. Cohen answered to knot the score at 36, but Sims hit a three to put Appalachian ahead, 39-36. Davidson got back-to-back baskets from Archambault and JP Kuhlman, but the Mountaineers pushed out to a 47-40 lead with just over 10 minutes to play as Sims drained consecutive three-pointers.

Davidson put together a 6-2 run, capped by a pair of free throws from Cohen, to cut it to one possession with seven minutes left before the Mountaineers responded with a 9-2 run to open up a 58-49 lead with 5:07 remaining. The Wildcats would get within five, 58-53, as Archambault made one of two from the line and hit a layup, but Sims made a pair of free throws to push the margin to 62-53 with two minutes to play. Barr's fifth three-ball of the night cut the lead to 62-56 with 1:42 left, but Sims scored the Mountaineers final four points to seal the 66-56 win.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 8-3 lead to start the game as Sims scored five straight points. The Wildcats cut it to one, 10-9, on a Barr three with 12:30 remaining, and again, 15-14, on a trey from Archambault with 9:30 left in the half. Appalachian again pushed its margin to five, but Barr hit his second trey of the half to put the 'Cats within a score and Ben Allison knotted the game at 19 with a jumper in the paint with just over six minutes remaining.

Barr's third three of the half gave Davidson its first lead, 22-21, with 5:25 remaining, but Sims put Appalachian back ahead with a bucket at the other end, and the Mountaineers built a 28-22 lead on baskets from Marcus Wright and Ryann Abraham. Allison took a three from the top of the key with the shot clock winding down, and Barr hit a fourth trey after Archambault grabbed the offensive rebound. Allison converted a pair of free throws to put the 'Cats within one, 28-27, with just over a minute remaining in the period. Brand's three missed, and Davidson regained possession on a Nathan Healy turnover before Brendan McKillop nailed a three with 12 seconds remaining to lift the 'Cats ahead, 30-28, at the half.

Davidson finished the first period shooting just 9-for-32 (28.1 percent) from the field and 6-for-17 (35.3 percent) from behind the line, but pulled ahead thanks to the hot hand of Barr, who finished the period a perfect 4-for-4 with all four attempts from deep. Appalachian shot 39.1 percent (9-for-23) from the field in the period and attempted just three from behind the line (2-for-3, 66.7 percent). Brand led the Mountaineers with seven points and was a perfect 2-for-2, and Sims added six on 3-of-5 shooting.

Davidson returns to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. tipoff at Western Carolina.
