Wildcats Hold Off Western Carolina 75-72

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Freshmen Jake Cohen and Nik Cochran each scored 14 points to lead Davidson as the Wildcats held on for a 75-72 SoCon men's basketball victory at Western Carolina Saturday night.
Cohen knocked down the first of two free throw attempts to give the Wildcats (13-12, 8-5 SoCon) a three-point lead with six seconds left. He missed the second, and the Catamounts' Jake Robinson missed a contested 3-pointer as the horn sounded for the final margin.
Ben Allison netted tallied 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench as the Davidson reserves put up 35 points, including 28 in the first half. JP Kuhlman finished with 11 points, and Steve Rossiter scored 10.
Bryant Barr posted nine points and four rebounds, and Brendan McKillop had a game-high nine assists with no turnovers.
Harouna Mutombo led the Catamounts (18-8, 8-6 SoCon) with 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. Brandon Giles scored 13 points, and Robinson finished with 11.
Mutombo hit a 3-pointer from the wing to knot the score at 70-70 with 4:07 to play, and both teams had chances to take the lead multiple times over the next three minutes but came away with empty possessions.
The Wildcats capitalized on three offensive rebounds in one possession, and the last was a Cohen tip-in to make the score 72-70 with 1:05 to go.
Robinson missed a 3-pointer for the Catamounts, but this time Western Carolina pounded the offensive glass. Cochran finally got the defensive board after two more missed shots around the basket and got it to McKillop, who was fouled with 24 seconds left.
The junior missed the front end of the 1-and-1, but Allison got the rebound and got the ball to Kuhlman, who was fouled. Kuhlman hit two from the foul line, making the margin 74-70 with 17 seconds left.
Mutumbo drove the length of the court and scored a quick layup with nine seconds left. After a timeout, the 'Cats inbounded to Cohen, who was fouled to set up his two-shot free-throw opportunity.
Cochran, Barr and Allison combined to score 28 points off the bench in the first half. Consecutive triples from Robinson gave Western a 32-24 cushion late in the frame, but a Cochran 3-pointer sparked an 8-0 Davidson run to tie the score 32-32.
Western led 38-37, when Keaton Cole knocked down a step-back jumper with 17 seconds remaining, and the Catamounts had a 40-37 advantage at the break.
Davidson shot 46.4 percent from the floor and 72.7 from the free-throw line for the game. The Wildcats clamped down defensively in the second frame, and Western Carolina shot just 34.4 percent for the half, including 3-for-11 from long distance. Davidson used a 38-31 rebounding advantage to score 12 second-chance points.
The Wildcats return home to take on Wofford Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena.
Game Notes: Cochran surpassed his career high of 10 points, set against Gonzaga earlier this season… Barr went over 700 points for his career and now has 707… Barr and Will Archambault are one game away from tying Andrew Lovedale for the school record for career games played (130)… It was Western Carolina's second loss at home this season.
