DAVIDSON, N.C. – Andrew Huck threw for 139 yards and a score and rushed for 43 yards, while the Butler defense gave up just 185 yards of offense to post a 24-8 Pioneer Football League victory over Davidson Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Jonathan Carkhuff completed 16-of-22 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats (1-4, 1-2 PFL), and Justin Williams had 16 carries for 41 yards. Lanny Funsten caught four passes for a career-high 62 yards and a score.
Daniel Astrop led the defense with 10 tackles (seven solo), and Patrick Moynahan recorded nine stops and a tackle for loss. Peter Kidwell had two tackles and an interception, the first of the season for Davidson.
Huck was 14-for-20 for the Bulldogs (3-3, 1-2 PFL), and Matt Kobli rushed 10 times for 62 yards and a pair of TDs. Jordan Koopman caught seven passes for 82 yards and a score. Jordan Ridley led the defense with 10 tackles, and the Bulldogs combined for three sacks.
Butler gave up just 113 total yards until Davidson's final offensive series of the game. The Bulldog offense helped out, converting 9-of-16 third downs and holding the ball for 35:19, compared to 24:41 of possession for Davidson.
“We're not taking care of the little things, and until we do, we're not going to turn the corner as a program,” said Davidson coach Tripp Merritt.
Leading 10-0 at the break, Butler opened the second half with some trickery. Bulldog kicker David Lang tapped an onside kick and recovered it 12 yards down the field.
The Bulldogs capitalized and Huck found Koopman for a 4-yard touchdown pass, making the margin 17-0 early in the third. Kobli converted a 4th-and-short along the way with a 1-yard run on a quarterback sneak at the Davidson 28. Huck also hit Koopman for a 20-yard completion to set up the score.
Kobli capped the afternoon for the Bulldogs with a 21-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-goal from the Davidson 21-yard line with 1:46 left in the game, making the score 24-0.
The 'Cats used the two-minute offense to break up the shutout with 55.6 seconds left when Carkhuff found Funsten for a 24-yard TD pass. Funsten also caught a 14-yard pass from Carkhuff during the drive, and Josh Yost had a 22-yard reception.
Butler used a turnover to set up their first scoring drive when Jack McKenna picked off a Carkhuff pass in the second quarter. Stephen Depositar rattled off a 14-yard run, and Huck found Koopman for a 15-yard completion that set up a Kobli 1-yard TD run and a 7-0 Bulldog lead.
Lang added a 28-yard field goal, set up by a 14-yard Huck run on 3rd-and-long earlier in the drive, just before the end of the first half for a 10-0 Bulldog cushion at the break.
The Wildcats start a two-game road trip at Morehead State next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Game Notes: Williams needs 106 kick return yards to become the PFL all-time leader… It was Butler's first win at Richardson Stadium.
