BOONE, N.C. – Nate Latigue scored twice for Appalachian State to lead the Mountaineers past Davidson, 2-0, in Southern Conference men's soccer action Tuesday night in ASU Soccer Stadium.
Latigue scored for Appalachian State (6-5-2, 3-1 SoCon) in the 10th minute with Sean Dreybus earning the assist, and then Latigue found a loose ball and added an unassisted tally in the 65th minute for the final margin.
“Appalachian State came out and put us under pressure early and we did not respond well,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “We didn't match their pressure and energy, got back on our heels and allowed a goal we should not have. We had our chances, but we weren't able to convert.”
The Wildcats (5-5-5, 1-3-2 SoCon) had five shots on goal, but were unable to get any of them past Mountaineer goalkeeper Drake Branson. Davidson's best chances came in the first half from senior Yannick Pilgrim (Arima, Trinidad and Tobago), who had a one-on-one opportunity, and freshman Jake Keator (Jacksonville, Fla.), who had a close-range chance.
“When you play on the road in important conference matches, you need to bring your 'A' game, and we didn't do that tonight,” said Spear. “Having a week off to evaluate and improve is probably the best thing for us now. It is not a time for rest though; it is a time for us to get stronger.”
Appalachian State had 11 shots, three on goal, to Davidson's seven shots. Appalachian State had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Wildcats will return home for the remainder of the regular season. Next Tuesday they will host Georgia Southern at Alumni Stadium. The 'Cats will then conclude the slate with non-conference matches against Presbyterian Saturday, October 30 at 7 p.m. and Wake Forest Tuesday, November 2. All matches are set to start at 7 p.m.
The first round of the Southern Conference Tournament begins Saturday, November 6.
