Field Hockey Concludes Season With OT Win Over UC Davis

STANFORD, Calif. –
Junior Jennie Mostellar scored the overtime-winner to end the 2009 Davidson field hockey season on a winning note, as the Wildcats defeated UC Davis, 2-1 on Friday night at Stanford's Varsity Turf in the consolation round of the NorPac Championship Tournament.

Sophomore Hannah English (Louisville, Ky.) gave the 'Cats (7-12) a 1-0 lead 5:23 into the second half, but UC Davis (3-15) converted a penalty corner attempt in the 51st minute to even the match at one. The match went 10:17 into overtime before Mostellar scored the game-winner.

Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.) dribbled across the circle and scored on a reverse stick shot from the top of the circle for the unassisted goal. English's tally was also unassisted, coming off a broken corner attempt. She received the ball at the top of the circle and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Conley Craven for the goal.

"It was a tough start against UC Davis as they came at us hard and we were still tired from the night before," said Davidson head coach Ginny Sutton. "With great determination we fought through the game we were ready to win the overtime battle after the heartbreaker against Cal."  Jennie had great poise as she picked up the ball at the top of the circle and the diving reverse chip was beautiful.

An All-NorPac selection, Mostellar finished as the Wildcats' scoring leader with six goals and two assists for 14 points.

Playing in her final game, senior GK Christa Goeke (Princeton, N.J.) made six saves, while Craven made three. The 'Cats were strong defensively in the first half, allowing just one shot, but the Aggies surged in the second half with eight shots.

Goeke was tested late, making a pair of saves in the final minute. She received help from her defense as well, as sophomore Steph Meador tallied a defensive save just 15 seconds into the overtime frame.

"Steph came away with a huge defensive save," said Sutton. "She dove across the cage to make it. It was just awesome."

UC Davis just managed a 12-10 advantage in shots.

No. 2W California will face No. 1W Stanford for the 2009 NorPac Championship. Cal narrowly defeated the 'Cats late in overtime on Thursday night. Stanford is the 15th-ranked team in the country.
