Davidson Field Hockey Cruises To 7-0 Win Over Catawba

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Six different players scored seven goals for the Davidson field hockey team, as the Wildcats defeated Catawba, 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field. Davidson improves to 4-8, while Catawba fell to 2-8.
Sophomore Hannah English (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Clare Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led the offensive attack with four points each. English scored twice to open the match with Perry tallying assists on both. Perry then scored Davidson's third goal of the match. Freshmen Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Brit Donaldson (Charlotte, N.C.) both registered a goal and assist each.
The 'Cats were strong defensively, not allowing Catawba a single shot. Davidson registered a season-high 42 shots, 21 of which were on goal, and also received a season-high 15 penalty corner attempts. Catawba goalkeeper Bronwen Gainsford made 14 saves.
English's first goal came in the 15th minute, starting with a Davidson penalty corner attempt. The Catawba defense battled for the ball at the top of the circle just to the left of the net, but Perry was able to feed it across to English at the top of the circle on the far-post side. English then sent a hard shot through traffic for the score.
The second goal, scored just over five minutes later, nearly mirrored the first as Perry won another battle off a penalty corner and found English at the top of the circle for the score.
Perry added a goal of her own with 12:27 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Meg Jarrell (Fairfax Station, Va.) collected a rebound from a blocked shot taken by freshman Gray Robinson (Louisville, Ky.) and then found Perry for the goal.
Amato gave the Wildcats a 4-0 lead heading into halftime, scoring with 2:45 remaining in the half. Amato was able to maneuver in front of the net and collect the rebound off her first shot attempt for the score.
Davidson opened the second half by converting on another penalty corner. Amato found Donaldson in front of the net just under two minutes in.
Catawba held Davidson scoreless until late when the 'Cats added two more goals.
Robinson scored her first career goal off a penalty corner from sophomore Ellie Szykowny (Columbus, Ohio). Robinson received the ball at the top of the circle and blasted it through traffic with 4:26 remaining.
Donaldson scored the final goal with 45 seconds remaining in the match. Senior Liz Luckey (Richmond, Va.) held the ball along the goal line near the left post and sent a quick pass to Donaldson in front of the net for the goal.
Davidson will travel to Richmond , Va. next to face Saint Louis on Saturday, Oct. 10 and Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, Oct. 11. Both matches are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
